461 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, NY

461 Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is the quintessential metropolitan boulevard. It is here, directly across from the New York Public Library, that 461 takes its place in the ongoing, glittering history of the Avenue. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the architectural form of 461 respects the great tradition of Fifth Avenue yet makes its own dramatic contemporary statement. The 10-story base evokes the articulated stone style of surrounding buildings, while above it a sleek 18-story tower becomes a shaft of gently curving glass supported by handsome corner piers. A peaked copper mansard roof with a dramatic lighting scheme crowns the building.
